PLEASE SHARE MORE ABOUT YOUR PROFESSIONAL ROLE AND RESPONSIBLITIES.:

I currently hold the position of Business Center Operations Leader (BCOL), where my primary responsibility is to ensure operational excellence and achieve our financial performance targets for the business center. As the BCOL, I am accountable for overseeing the day-to-day business operations of approximately 280 individuals who generate close to USD 50 million in net revenue annually. Additionally, I am a professional engineer and a recognized subject matter expert in green infrastructure within the company.

Green infrastructure refers to the practice of treating polluted stormwater by employing various filtration devices to purify the water before it is released back into the ground or our natural resources. As part of my role, I have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues across the company, providing expert design advice on green infrastructure practices and actively contributing to the design team.

WHY WERE YOU LOOKING TO GET AN MBA?:

I hold an undergraduate degree in civil engineering, which provided me with a solid foundation in technical and design principles. The curriculum was heavily focused on mathematics and science, equipping me with the necessary skills to excel as a design engineer. However, I had always been captivated by the business aspects of engineering, not just the technical side. This interest led me to consider pursuing an MBA.

As my career progressed, I began to delve into the business aspects of our profession. Recognizing this opportunity, I decided it was an ideal time to pursue an MBA. Obtaining an MBA not only satisfies my curiosity for the business side of engineering but also presents potential advantages and opportunities for career advancement.

By pursuing an MBA, I aim to differentiate myself and broaden my skill set, opening doors to new and exciting prospects in my professional journey.

DID YOU FIND THE CURRICULUM WAS IMMEDIATELY APPLICABLE? PLEASE EXPLAIN.:

One of the taglines of JWMI is to foster a “learn today, apply tomorrow” mindset. Throughout my education at JWMI, I have experienced numerous instances where this principle held. On countless occasions, I came across concepts and ideas in our weekly readings or discussion questions that directly related to situations in my professional life.

These instances provided me with valuable opportunities to apply what I had learned to real-life scenarios. Whether it was a situation that validated my actions or areas where I identified room for improvement, being able to apply our weekly learning to my job has significantly contributed to my career growth. Specifically, it has bolstered my confidence as a leader and enhanced my executive presence.

The ability to connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications has been instrumental in my professional development. It has not only expanded my skill set but also enriched my understanding of how to navigate various challenges in the workplace. JWMI’s emphasis on the learn-apply mindset has truly made a positive impact on my career trajectory.

HOW DID YOU NAVIGATE JOB, FAMILY, AND WORK? WHAT STRATEGIES DID YOU IMPLEMENT TO GET IT DONE?:

Establishing a routine for managing weekly readings, discussion questions, and assignments is beneficial. By working ahead as much as possible, you can effectively handle unexpected events that may arise in life. This approach proved successful for me as it helped alleviate stress levels. Completing my discussion questions by Monday allowed me to allocate the remaining days of the week to respond to others’ questions. This strategy was particularly useful when assignments were due. Moreover, I made an effort to take Fridays off from work on assignment due dates, enabling me to dedicate the entire day to completing the task while still having the weekend for personal activities.

Furthermore, I emphasize the importance of proactive communication with professors throughout your academic journey. Do not hesitate to reach out to them early and frequently, as they are readily available to assist you and ensure that you derive a valuable learning experience from the program.

IN JUST A FEW WORDS, DESCRIBE WHAT “LEADERSHIP” MEANS TO YOU.:

Leadership encompasses various complexities and is not always straightforward. At times, the option that seems easy may conflict with the choice that is truly right. Engaging in a leadership program aids in the development of enhanced leadership skills. From my perspective, effective leadership involves bringing out the best in individuals and aligning them with suitable roles to maximize their potential. This, in turn, contributes to the success and profitability of a business.

Moreover, leadership entails recognizing when changes are necessary and adapting one’s leadership style to suit the circumstances, fostering an environment conducive to success for both the business and its people. Leadership is multi-faceted, with numerous layers that continue to evolve over time.

PLEASE SHARE ANY ADVICE FOR NEW STUDENTS EMBARKING ON THE MBA JOURNEY.:

The journey is lengthy, yet simultaneously, when you find yourself on the other side, having completed it and taking time to reflect, it will seem to have passed quickly. There will be moments when things feel overwhelming, but the awareness of built-in breaks between classes serves as motivation to push through each quarter. Embrace and savor the journey. You will derive as much from the program as you invest in it, so avoid cutting corners as doing so only short-changes yourself.
