Executive Director, Compensation and Analytics
Human Resources Professional
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR CAREER PATH.
I was previously an Executive Director of Compensation and Analytics at TriNet Group Inc., an HR outsourcing company for small to medium size businesses. Working on my MBA has been a time of reflection that has given me a deeper understanding of my capabilities and allowed me to add new leadership skills to my toolbox.
WHY WERE YOU LOOKING TO GET AN MBA?
In my twenty-two years of work experience in start-up environments and at public companies, I’ve witnessed bad leadership and poor business strategy execution first-hand. In an effort not to contribute to this problem, I joined JWMI’s leadership MBA program to do my part to improve business outcomes and be an effective leader.
HOW HAS THE JWMI CURRICULUM HELPED YOU IN YOUR CAREER?
JWMI’s curriculum has given me a big-picture view of business in general and helped me gain a new perspective on how to better manage my functional area of expertise. As a Human Resources professional, having the right people in the right positions at the right time to deliver business results is essential. However, without a clear picture of how to win in business and galvanize people, it is difficult to focus on the strategy that will have the most significant impact. JWMI’s curriculum teaches you to ask questions and delve into the “why” that will help you strategize the “how.” Personally, the program also allowed me to explore a new vision and strategy for the next chapter in my career.
DID YOU FIND THE CURRICULUM WAS IMMEDIATELY APPLICABLE?
Absolutely! The JWMI program is designed to take concepts and put them into use the very next day. The courses are built so that you learn to apply the concepts and then share the findings with the rest of your class. The JWMI motto “Learn on Monday. Apply on Tuesday.” is woven throughout each course. As an example, by applying Value Stream Mapping from the Operations Management course, I was able to implement proven principles of Kaizen and Six Sigma to drive efficiency and effectiveness into the performance management and compensation programs.
LOOKING BACK AT WHAT YOU THOUGHT ABOUT AN ONLINE PROGRAM WHEN YOU FIRST EMBARKED, WHAT WAS YOUR OVERALL IMPRESSION NOW? DID IT MEET YOUR EXPECTATIONS, VIA DQ BOARDS, EOP VIDEOS, JACK CALLS, FACULTY ETC.
When I first embarked on the JWMI program, I had a demanding job and family obligations so juggling these responsibilities was critical. The online platform gave me the flexibility I needed, but I still had uncertainties around the educational model. However, my choice in JWMI and this online model was confirmed the moment I submitted my first discussion question (DQ). I was surprised by the wealth of learning opportunities from my classmates from varying industries.
And now that my MBA journey is complete and I can look back on it in its entirety, I can honestly share that the program over-delivers in every way. Jack’s passion and determination to make great leaders out of us all are imbued into the fabric of the curriculum. The various vehicles used to deliver this curriculum, DQ boards, Expert of Practice videos, Jack calls and the like uniquely engaged students each week. These elements coupled with coaching and mentoring from professors is what sets this program apart and why it worked so well for me.
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING EXPERIENCE IN THE PROGRAM?
Besides the great curriculum and content, the most rewarding experience in the program for me was learning about how to be a great leader and win in business from Jack and the professors. Each professor generously distilled their wealth of knowledge, experience, and insight making the program engaging and fun. Where can you find an MBA program that has the footprints of a great leader like Jack Welch? Or professors, experts, and leaders in their field who are invested in your success? You’ll find it at JWMI.
HOW DID YOU NAVIGATE JOB, FAMILY, AND WORK? WHAT STRATEGIES DID YOU IMPLEMENT TO GET IT DONE?
Nothing worth pursuing comes easy, but with an online program, you have the flexibility and freedom to manage your schedule. I took my first class at JWMI on Leadership in the summer while my husband and I were in Greece celebrating our anniversary. I downloaded the course material, listened to audible books and wrote my weekly discussion questions while sunbathing on the Greek Islands, riding ferries, and relaxing in the hotel rooms. This program is not only doable but if you are determined to learn and practice what you are learning you will find great success.
